The first ever Columbia University GLBTQ film festival.  Sponsored by the Columbia University School of the Arts student group QuArt (Queer Art) and the Office of the University Chaplain.

Saturday, February 23 at 3pm, join us for a panel discussion with award winning filmmakers Tom Kalin (Swoon, I Shot Andy Warhol) and Rose Troche (Go Fish, The Safety of Objects) and Columbia University faculty member Mark J. Huisman on the current state and future of gay and lesbian cinema.

Then, at 7pm, join us for screenings of several short films by SoA students and faculty, followed by a reception. Both events take place in the Lifetime Screening Room (511 Dodge Hall).

Sign-up sheets are posted on the Dodge Hall 4th Floor bulletin board. The deadline to sign-up is Thursday October 11th. Yes, this Thursday!

All years, divisions, ability levels and genders are welcome to join the teams. If you expressed interest in these sports on the google group, now is the time to take action and sign-up! Games in the indoor leagues take place on the weekends and/or late at night, and there are at least 2-4 games per league season.

Please consider your ability to make the time commitment before signing up. Depending on the numbers on the team, you will be needed for at least half of these games to make a full crew! Captains will contact you with details next week.

The SoA Writing Division extends a warm welcome to Tobias Wolff, the first guest of the 2007-2008 Nonfiction Dialogues.  The Nonfiction dialogues are a student-initiated program now in their third year.  They bring distinguished writers to the school for informal colloquies with nonfiction professor Lis Harris. The Tobias Wollf event will be held in  on Thursday, October 11 at 8pm in 413 Dodge Hall.

Upcoming writers participating in the Dialogues include Adrian Nicole LeBlanc, author of Random Family, on November 29th, and a third writer to be announced.

Tobias Wolff is best known for his short fiction and memoirs, although he has written several novels.   Best known works include This Boy’s Life (1989), In Pharaoh’s Army (1994) and Old School (2003).  In 1989 Mr. Wolff was chosen as recipient of the Rea Award for the Short Story.

Our Word, the student group devoted to artists of color, is having its first meeting of the semester.  Come to eat free pizza, meet peers you may not have already, hear about exciting events planned for the semester, and relax for an hour before your next class.

Archipelago cordially invites the School of the Arts, the School of Architecture, & the School of Journalism to the beginning of collaborative journey.

The graduate schools of Columbia University operate as a kind of archipelago: islands of intense activity that don’t interact much with the other islands around them. Archipelago seeks to bridge these gaps through film, one of the most collaborative & interdisciplinary mediums.

BUT WE NEED YOUR HELP.
We are seeking committee members & volunteers who are interested in helping us coordinate interdisciplinary events in the coming semester, which include a 24-hour film shootout in September and a film festival in December. We hope to create opportunities for graduate students to collaborate as well as to showcase their work which may not get the chance to be seen outside their own communities.
