AN EVENING WITH TOBIAS WOLFF

The Writing Division is pleased to present:

Tobias Wolff

The SoA Writing Division extends a warm welcome to Tobias Wolff, the first guest of the 2007-2008 Nonfiction Dialogues.  The Nonfiction dialogues are a student-initiated program now in their third year.  They bring distinguished writers to the school for informal colloquies with nonfiction professor Lis Harris. The Tobias Wollf event will be held in  on Thursday, October 11 at 8pm in 413 Dodge Hall.

Upcoming writers participating in the Dialogues include Adrian Nicole LeBlanc, author of Random Family, on November 29th, and a third writer to be announced.

Tobias Wolff is best known for his short fiction and memoirs, although he has written several novels.   Best known works include This Boy’s Life (1989), In Pharaoh’s Army (1994) and Old School (2003).  In 1989 Mr. Wolff was chosen as recipient of the Rea Award for the Short Story.

PODCAST: OUR WORD ANNUAL READING

It’s no secret that one of the Daily Dish’s favorite events is the Our Word Annual Spring Reading!  2007 was no exception.  Founder Russell Contreras was on hand again this year, taking time from writing for the Boston Globe to MC the festivities.   Thanks to Our Word and SoARats, we are happy to be able to podcast it for you, in case you missed it.

Our Word is a student organization open to any MFA student in the Writing Division in the School of the Arts at Columbia University. Their goal is to promote cultural diversity within the Writing Division and the literary community in general.

The 2007 Our Word Spring Reading included these second-year members:  Gesenia Alvarez (fiction), Samuel Anthony Autman (nonfiction), Emily Austin (fiction), Rowena Cruz (nonfiction), Dora King (poetry), Vyshali Manivannan (fiction), Richard J. Timothy Liu is the author of six books of poems, most recently Of Thee I Sing and For Dust Thou Art. A new book, Polytheogamy, is forthcoming. His poems have been translated into seven languages, and his journals and papers are archived in the Berg Collection at the New York Public Library. An Associate Professor at William Paterson University and a member of the Core Faculty in Bennington College’s Graduate Writing Seminars, Liu lives in Manhattan.

ON THE EDGE: NEW INDEPENDENT CINEMA FROM CHINA

ON THE EDGE: New Independent Cinema From China starts TOMORROW at Columbia University!

This just in: a rare live-painting performance "TRACES" by renowned painters and Chinese "National Treasures" the Zhou Brothers will mark the opening of ON THE EDGE: New Independent Cinema From China TOMORROW in Roone Arledge Auditorium at Columbia University. Also on hand to celebrate the occasion will be readings by acclaimed poet BeiDao and live accompaniment by award-winning musicians Yang Lu and Hsia-Ling Lin.

ON THE EDGE: New Independent Cinema From China (Thursday April 12 – Sunday April 15) Roone Arledge Auditorium at Lerner Hall on Columbia main campus and Walter Reade Theater at Lincoln Center.

And don’t forget the film: "THE WORLD", Jia Zhangke’s lyrical and moving depiction of life in contemporary Beijing, which plays following the performance!

Other films in the festival include "Blind Shaft", "The Orphan of Anyang", "Walking On the Wild Side", and "The Silent Holy Stones".

All of the directors are expected to be in attendance.  There will be a panel discussion with the directors set for Saturday April 14 moderated by esteemed film critic and Columbia University School of the Arts faculty member Richard Peña. This discussion will be free and open to the public.
