Please join us for this great collaboration between the School of International and Public Affairs (SIPA), and the School of the Arts (SoA) in their first New Play Collaboration:

Insurgency/Counterinsurgency:
a joint project of local NYC artists, activists, and the Columbia University Forum on Political Violence

COLUMBIA ART meets COLUMBIA POLITICS as Dan McSweeney (SIPA, 07), Cynthia Croot (SOA, 01), Cary McClelland (SIPA, 07), Jon Kern (SOA, 07) Alex Beech (SOA,07), Joanne Hudson (SOA, 08) join theatre artists to present plays focused on insurgency/Counter-insurgency…

This project will take place over the weekend of April 20-23.  Five teams of playwrights, directors, dramaturgs, and actors will come together over a single weekend to create five new ten-minute plays based on the theme of insurgency and counterinsurgency.  These new works will be presented on

ON THE EDGE: New Independent Cinema From China starts TOMORROW at Columbia University!

This just in: a rare live-painting performance "TRACES" by renowned painters and Chinese "National Treasures" the Zhou Brothers will mark the opening of ON THE EDGE: New Independent Cinema From China TOMORROW in Roone Arledge Auditorium at Columbia University. Also on hand to celebrate the occasion will be readings by acclaimed poet BeiDao and live accompaniment by award-winning musicians Yang Lu and Hsia-Ling Lin.

ON THE EDGE: New Independent Cinema From China (Thursday April 12 – Sunday April 15) Roone Arledge Auditorium at Lerner Hall on Columbia main campus and Walter Reade Theater at Lincoln Center.

And don’t forget the film: "THE WORLD", Jia Zhangke’s lyrical and moving depiction of life in contemporary Beijing, which plays following the performance!

Other films in the festival include "Blind Shaft", "The Orphan of Anyang", "Walking On the Wild Side", and "The Silent Holy Stones".

All of the directors are expected to be in attendance.  There will be a panel discussion with the directors set for Saturday April 14 moderated by esteemed film critic and Columbia University School of the Arts faculty member Richard Peña. This discussion will be free and open to the public.
