Wednesday, April 23 1pm
Dodge Hall 603 <--New Location!

This workshop will focus on health care and health insurance options for performing and visual artists in the New York City metro area. The aim is to give participants a firm grounding in health insurance basics, a comprehensive overview of options in our area, and a better ability to make health care coverage-related decisions. We’ll review job-related options, direct-purchase plans, government-subsidized programs, and options for the uninsured, like Artist Access. There will be a Q&A period at the end of the workshop, and time for individual consultations.

Presenter Renata Marinaro is a social worker and Manager of Health Services Education and Outreach at the Health Insurance Resource Center (HIRC) of The Actors Fund. HIRC connects artists, craftspeople and entertainers to health insurance and affordable health care. The Actors Fund is a national, non-profit organization that provides for the social welfare of all entertainment professionals.

Filed under: Film Division |  Life After the MFA |  Alumni |  Film Studies MA

From a New York Times article published Sunday, March 23, 2008:

Phenom Director Goes to War
By KATRINA ONSTAD

TORONTO

And yet, while she appeared to be trailed by those little horizontal stripes that indicate a cartoon character’s speediness, Ms. Peirce is slow at something: making movies. It has taken her nine years to follow up her much lauded feature debut, “Boys Don’t Cry.” (more…)

SOA FILM DIVISION A MAJOR PRESENCE AT TRIBECA FILM FEST

Filed under: Film Division |  Screenings |  Life After the MFA

While the School of the Arts Film Division readies for its own film festival, exciting things are happening downtown, just as they happened in Park City, Utah earlier this year.

For the second year in a row, Columbia University has a major presence at the Tribeca Film Festival. In a banner year already marked by unprecedented success at the Sundance Film Festival, alumni and current students of the School of the Arts Film Division, a former SOA faculty member, and a Columbia College alumna will screen ten new films at the 2007 Tribeca Film Festival. Topping last year’s impressive showing, this year’s festival will unveil three features and seven shorts.

The films to be screened include the features Blue State, directed and written by Marshall Lewy, (Film ’06); Normal Adolescent Behavior, directed and written by Beth Schacter. (Film ’04); and Take the Bridge, directed by Sergio M. Castilla, a former Film Division professor. The shorts are A Warm, Comforting Home, directed by Annette Apitz (Film ’98); Dear Lemon Lima, directed and written by Suzi Yoonessi (Film ’06); Happiness, directed and written by Sophie Barthes (MIA ’03); Lock, directed by Ming Kai Leung (Film ’06); Raving, directed and written by Julia Stiles (CC ’06); Red Shoes, directed and written by Li-Anne Huang (Film ’08); and Thorndike, directed and written by Chris Teague (Film ’06).

The festival runs April 25 through May 6. For ticket information and screening times and locations, visit the Tribeca Film Festival site.
