Center for Career Education: Peer Networking Workshop

Does the thought of arts "networking" bring to mind shameless self-promotion, smarmy handshakes and "let’s do lunch?"  If so, then it’s time to revise your perception.   Networking simply means learning to take advantage of opportunities that happen around you every day.  Come to this free workshop on developing your networking skills, sponsored by the Columbia University Center for Career Education.

Join fellow graduate students for this hands-on workshop about professional networking. Instead of simply talking about it, we will share several exercises with the goal of making networking a more comfortable strategy to use in exploring careers and pursuing jobs.

Wednesday’s alumni panelists at Columbia’s Center for Career Education (CCE) "Careers in: Performing and Fine Arts" panel shared the real story about life in the artists’ world.

It’s difficult to describe the artistic synergy that existed in a room full of artists gathered to empower one another. It was an inspiring and nurturing event… like learning the facts of life from your big sister or brother. You had to be there, you should have been there… if you weren’t here’s a glimpse of what you missed… (more…)

SUMMER FUNDING: FAQs

Filed under: Artists' Resource Ctr (ARC) |  Financial Aid |  Ctr for Career Ed (CCE) |  Stud Fincl Planning (SFP) |  Loans |  Budget Increase |  Summer

A forward-thinking student recently e-mailed me the following question:

"I have some questions for you regarding the summer. how do most students afford the summer? i assume most get jobs which i am actively seeking – but i wonder if there is a back-up plan? is there loan money available?...I am trying to be proactive and get organized ahead of time…and i just am still trying to familiarize myself with NYC and Columbia and all the possibilities for income or funding available…I’m looking into all of my options (whether i use them or not)."

First of all, congratulations.  You are taking an important first step by thinking about these things well in advance.  These are obviously important questions, so in order to help clarify options for summer funding, I’ve created the following FAQ list.  Enjoy! (more…)
